The Museum's programmes suit an integrated approach to curriculum delivery. Choose one of these programmes or talk to us about tailoring a programme to meet your teaching focus.

Most programmes cost $3 per student and run for 1 to 2 hours with FREE teaching resources. Plan your visit at least one term in advance so you don't miss out.

The Museum also features changing exhibitions and collaborative programmes with
Capital E, City Gallery Wellington, Cable Car Museum, Colonial Cottage Museum, East by West Ferry, Matiu Somes Island and Petone Settlers Museum.

A whole-day excursion for groups of 35 to 90 people. All-in-one booking with just one phone call to experience:

  • Museum of Wellington
  • Return ferry trip on Wellington harbour
  • Petone Settlers Museum
  • Fish & Chips lunch
  • Matiu Somes Island

This is a full day excursion with lots of walking - duration 8.45 am to 2.45 pm. A comprehensive activity book is available as part of this programme. Payment is required in advance or on the day.

Explore the many ways stories can be told and develop appreciation of Maori interpretations of natural phenomena. Encounter the harbour taniwha - Ngake and Whataitai - and follow the exploits of mischievous demi-god Maui.

plimmer's ark - SEARCH FOR THE INCONSTANT

This supported, outside self-touring programme is a fun and educational experience around Queens Wharf and the near surrounds.?Students explore the beginnings of Wellington?s harbour through an old wreck and the story of John Plimmer. A teacher resource kit is sent on request.

Experience the wharf and the Museum. A look at the major factors of change around Wellington?s waterfront. This programme covers: earthquakes, reclamation, conservation, sail, steam and container ships; and one of Wellington?s founding fathers, John Plimmer.

    Students evaluate primary and secondary resources, exploring different perspectives and interpretations in a case study of a profound historical event.
