One of a large class of Harbour Defence Motor Launches, later classified as Seaward defence Motor Launches, designed by the Admiralty and built in various countries. In NZ waters for entire working life, including periods with Volunteer Reserve and on fisheries patrol after WW II. Laid up in 1989 and now under protection ashore at HMNZS Philomel naval establishment at Devonport. It is intended to display Kuparu at the nearby Naval Museum in Devonport, Auckland
