Historic Ships and Boats
A data base of historic New Zealand Ships and Boats

This site was prompted by the initiative and format of the International Register of Historic Ships by Norman Brouwer published by Chatham Publishing and the activity World Ship Trust

We believe the existence of a New Zealand Historic Ships data base modelled along the lines begun by Norman Brouwer will assist historic ship and boat owners in New Zealand and overseas researchers in their effort to research, maintain and restore vessels. Sharing of information on type of vessel, materials, histories, locations and related news will assist their cause.
This site is an initiative of the Museum of Wellington City & Sea [MOWCAS] and has been made possible by the enthusiasm of a student group from Victoria University in Wellington.

Provision of the data and forms for the initial 35 vessels is greatfully acknowledged to John Ackrill, one of the owners of the historic floating Crane Hikitia.

Searches can be carried out by year of build, vessel name, by New Zealand region, and the rather unexpected bonus of by appearance. Most vessels will have images and this will allow perusal of the Picture Gallery to select the vessel by appearance.

Updating will be done by MOWCAS. Please email to with changes .
