Choose from one of the following visit options or contact the Education Coordinator to tailor a visit for your class. Resources are available with each visit option and a full list and order form can be provided.


GALLERY EXPLORER- GENERAL VISIT

Visit the entire museum and discover the stories and myths that surround Wellington and its harbour. Handle objects to understand the past and be fascinated by the clever Hologram show. Duration 1.5 or 2 hours Recommended Level all years

TE WAKA WAHINE

Learn about the Wahine Disaster through film, newspaper and artifacts from the ship, then return to the classroom to conduct an 'official' inquiry into the disaster. Duration 1.5-2 hours Recommended Level Year 3 to 11

SETTLEMENT BY SAIL

Learn about the arrival and settlement of Maori and European in Wellington, the New Zealand Company, Wakefield settlement and tangata whenua, through objects and interpretation. Finish off by making a rag mat using resources that were available to the early settlers. Duration 1.5 hours Recommended Level Year 7 to 13

MAORI LIFE AND LEGEND

Learn about the legends of Te Whanganui a Tara - Wellington's great harbour, through film and a hologram feature. Explore Maori life through objects. Finish off by getting creative with contemporary weaving materials. Duration 1.5-2 hours Recommended Level Year 1 to 8

URBAN SETTLEMENT

Students will explore the urban settlement of Wellington1840 to the present day through the use of early plans, reclamation photographs and questions. The visit will finish with a mapping activity on Queens Wharf focusing on usage of buildings and berths and will conclude in the Waterfront Project Office looking at present and proposed waterfront development. Duration 1.5-2 hours Recommended Level Year 7 to 13
