WHAT DOES A CONSERVATOR DO?
Conservators preserve valuable historic items by stabilising the constituent materials and protecting the object against further deterioration.
Our conservators belong to New Zealand Professional Conservators Group. They have considerable experience ranging from work at institutions such as Te Papa, and in the field on historic wooden huts such as Scott's Hut in Antarctica, the seaman's rescue huts on the Auckland Islands, and the 1840s whale boat in Lake Waikaremoana, as well as Maori canoes and meeting houses.
Current projects under evaluation include historic vessels on the Wanganui and Waikato Rivers, and the large anchor at the Taranaki Wharf.
