The Soggy Remains

The remains of Plimmer's Ark were rediscovered in 1997 under the Old Bank Arcade on Lambton Quay, Wellington.

The bow (front) section remains on display in its original location, in the basement of the Old Bank Arcade.

40 tonnes of material extracted from under the Old Bank are undergoing conservation treatment in gallery located on Queens Wharf.

From 6 August to 16 September 2009 access to the Plimmer's Ark conservation project is limited as the gallery is being used for Montana World of Wearable Art WOW 2009. Education tours and special tours can still be arranged by contacting Museum of Wellington City & Sea.

The Plimmer's Ark conservation project is the largest of its type in New Zealand.

Other ships around the world are also being conserved in the same way. Three of the best known are the Mary Rose in England, the Vasa in Sweden and the Batavia in Western Australia.

The Museum of Wellington City & Sea, funded by Wellington City Council is overseeing the conservation of Plimmer's Ark (with assistance from the Lottery Grants Board of the Department of Internal Affairs).
